The ramblings of a man touched by God

Last night, I was contacted by a friend who was disturbed that a man (claiming to be a Baptist) had told her that, since she was Catholic, she worships Mary and statues. Additionally he claimed that Jews were not going to heaven.
Combine that with a Christian man’s ranting on a website against “men viewing his pictures” insinuating that any man looking at him was gay.

Both these issues saddened me to the point of tears. Of course, that was after I exploded in holy anger over the stupidity of people who claim to love God. How we are missing the mark so much in the Love department. Interesting how “missing the mark” means the same as sin in greek. Sin does not always have to be an action. It can also be lack of action. As a Christian, one is called to love. Not loving is a sin to a Christian.

Why do we have to get involved in doctrinal or other issues when all that matters is to accept the gift of God that is Jesus?

“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life”
(John 3:16 NASB)

I see no doctrinal issues in this verse. It is so simple. God loves you, God gave Jesus to you, Believe in Him and Live. I see nothing in this verse that discusses Mary, the Pope, Jew or gentile, or gay or lesbian.

Baptist, Catholic, Protestant, Lutheran, Charismatic, Non-Denominational, whatever…. “Whoever” sure covers alot of ground.
We need to stop limiting what is God’s desire and His vision. “Whoever” includes drug addicts, prostitutes, alcoholics, nice people, bad people, convicts, Muslims, and yes even gays and lesbians. I do not care if you agree with their “lifestyle” or not. God’s Love still covers them. This is His Unconditional Love for each person. And He loves you the way you are. Accept that. However, He will not leave you the way you are if you are deep in sin.  He will rescue you, clean you up and set your feet on the right path.   And all us who call ourselves “followers of Jesus” or Christians need to accept and love you too. Do you not realize that Jesus died for you while you were yet a sinner? Or did you clean up your “act” and then present yourself to God and say “hey, it’s cool….I’m clean now…no need for Jesus to die for me”??? All of heaven would have laughed at you for that one.

“We love because He first loved us.”
(1John 4:19 NASB)

What first draws us to God is Love. God pursues us and keeps telling us that He loves us. It is this Love that first brought us to Jesus. It is this Love that captures our heart and soul. It is this Love that we cling to and rely on despite the circumstances of our lives.

In discussing these issues with a friend, we realized that John 3:16 is not complete unless we read the next verse.

“For God DID NOT send His Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him”
(John 3:17 NASB) italics and capitals mine!

If God does not judge, why are we? Who are we to judge catholic doctrines or pass judgment upon gays because we do not agree with them? If God sent Jesus NOT to judge, who are you to think that you can judge? Who made you GOD?

Following Jesus is so simple. His words were simply “Follow Me”.

We need to return to the simplicity of the good news about Jesus. Lay aside our stupid, insignificant doctrinal differences and pray for God’s love to soften our hearts and simplify our minds. No wonder the world wants nothing to do with the church today. We are feuding among ourselves over stupid things. While we are arguing doctrinal issues, our eyes are off of Jesus. And the damage we are doing to each other and to those who desperately need to hear about Jesus is undermining and destroying our witness to the world. Shame on us!!

In the biker ministry world, we have a slogan:
Love em all – Let God sort em out!

Burn this into your mind. Whenever you feel like passing judgment upon another person, remember to simply love them with the Love that God gave you through Jesus.

No matter your beliefs and doctrines, know that Jesus loves you. And with that love, I love you too. And if you are gay and want to view my picture – go ahead. In my eyes, you will see Jesus looking back at you and loving you.

  1. It’s just that simple. I wish more people recognized that. Thanks for the specific scriptural references. They add a dimension when folks feel they need to condemn. I like to start with Jesus’ answer to the question of what’s the most important commandment. He directly answer was to love God with all you got. He then expanded to bring up the second most important, which He clarified is “like” the first (meaning, IMO, that it is a derivative of loving God), saying that we are to love everybody and treat (actions of faith) everybody as we would want to be treated. He then sealed the discussion by declaring that ALL of the Scriptures and ALL of the prophets derive from these two. Any exegesis of scripture, say a claim that gays must be persecuted or Catholics or Evangelicals must be opposed or “terrorists” killed, needs to pass the One-Two Test above. (They won’t.) Simple, elegant, Divine.

Is your biker slogan “Love ‘Em All, let God sort ’em out” public domain? I’d like to spread the message, but I don’t want to step on toes.

    Yours in Christ,

  2. David,
Thanks for the post. Spread the message my brother! While it is not public domain, it is Jesus-domain!
    God bless,

    • Hey my brother . I’ve used the motto love em all let God sort em out as my ministry for 15 _20 years since 1996 . Its been my signature at the end of my emails of 3 different email addresses and I don’t claim it to be mine I just hope its not a bother to anyone else. I know of a couple of fellow bikers had patches made saying that and I used to correspond with them and I asked them about the patches and they didn’t ackowledge my signature for years they saw on my emails and that’s ok. I am anabaptist that we love our enemy as Christ said to. We don’t believe in war or violence in anyway. We believe in loving all. Anyhow love em all let God sort em out. Shalom

  3. I too have used this in my signature line since sometime in the ’90s. It continues to remind me to follow that simple idea.
